The story of 1972 Dunton Quarry Tourmaline discovery:

In autumn of 1972, on a mountain in Newry, Maine, something miraculous happened. Mineral collectors digging in the tailings of the abandoned Dunton Quarry broke into the largest pocket of Tourmaline ever discovered in North America.

Over the next two years they mined approximately 4000 lbs of gem quality Tourmaline crystals from this small quarry. The gems produced from these crystals glittered in hues of apple and mint, pink, magenta and burgundy, vivid watermelon bicolors and deep, pure blue. They were some of the best Tourmaline colors the world had ever seen.

In 1974, the end of the gem producing mineral zone was reached and since then, despite numerous mining ventures, the Dunton Quarry has never produced another Tourmaline.

Over the years, the legendary stockpile of Dunton Quarry tourmaline has been depleted to the point where they are increasingly rare and valuable, particularly in large sizes. One day in the not-so-distant future, there will be no more of these Tourmalines available.

This Dunton Quarry Tourmaline is part of this discovery!
