The organic, free-flow, nature-inspired style of Art Nouveau has always appealed to me- plant and insect forms created with precious metal and gemstone fire. Of particular fascination were the numerous fairy broaches crafted by Masters such as Rene' Lalique and Gaston Lafitte. Their jeweled plique a' jour dragonfly and butterfly wings seemed to me to be the pinnacle of jewelry craft and design and I always wanted to make something like that.
Have you ever had a dragonfly land near or on you, close enough and long enough to really look at it? They are literally living, flying jewels, perfectly designed by nature to be not only the ultimate insect hunters of mosquitoes and other annoying bugs but breathlessly beautiful at the same time.
Here is our jeweled dragonfly, handcrafted from 14 karat gold, Maine amethyst, Maine tourmaline and diamond accents. It is a little over two inches wide and a little over one inch long.
