Our latest Dunton Quarry watermelon Tourmaline project is this lovely 14k custom scroll design pendant with three diamond accents.
At this point in Maine's gemological history, the vast stockpile of beautiful, perfectly colored watermelon tourmaline slices from the incredible 1972 discovery on Plumbago Mountain in Newry, Maine is almost depleted. Every remaining piece is priceless. Since this slice is such a wonderful example of material from this epic discovery, we decided to go all out and create a completely unique piece using setting
techniques and design aspects we have never tried before.
The tourmaline is set by creating a curved bezel on three sides which the slice slides into. Then, intricate scrollwork, welded into place around the other two sides of the gemstone, permanently holds the stone against the bezel. For an added unexpected detail, the top section of the scroll frame and scroll itself is angled outward using a saw and bend technique, then welded into place. Three small diamonds are
scattered within the scroll, providing subtle accents of light. A hidden bail is built behind the angled section.
The result is a lovely and intriguing balanced asymmetry with the combination of geometric angles and nature-inspired organics contrasting off each other and focusing the eye on a magnificent slice of Maine watermelon tourmaline. While this piece was most enjoyable to create, it will be even more enjoyable to wear.
