The Ocean Blue story:

The most rare and coveted tourmaline color is Blue- true Blue. Not dark, inky, blackish blue, but blue. Like Sapphires. Like Eyes. Like the Ocean. Like the Ocean on a perfect summer day on the coast of New England.

This past Spring, a most remarkable tourmaline pocket was discovered at Mount Mica in Paris, Maine- a pocket of perfect Ocean blue color. It wasn't a big pocket, there were only two thousand grams of material recovered. This will translate to roughly two thousand carats of finished gemstones. You could cup your hands and hold it all. This will be likely be the most incredible thing that this world-famous mine will ever produce.

Mount Mica has given us so much over its two hundred plus years of production- the largest faceted American tourmaline gemstone, the largest North American tourmaline crystal, the first and longest producing American gemstone mine... the list goes on and on. But this... This. This material is unprecedented.

We are honored to be able to offer our customers the only official gemstones from this new and historic discovery- as limited as the supply ultimately is. We are cutting the vast majority of gemstones in our shop, to our meticulous quality standards. The gem crystals are just too precious for any other option.

Blue tourmaline is called Indicolite. The largest Maine Indicolite gemstone on record weighs 23.67 carats. The Mount Mica Ocean blue indicolite discovery will easily eclipse this 70 year-old record. There are several crystals that will produce thirty-plus carat gemstones and they will eventually be available.
